BY CAR:
Useful route planners: Click on the following links to www.viamichelin.com or www.ukmap.24.com to help plan your travel route or just type in your address in the form on the right and press go.
When travelling by car, here are some things to note:
- It is a requirement if you are from the UK to display a GB sticker on the rear of your car & that you have headlamp adjusters. You also need to carry spare bulbs, a first aid kit & a warning triangle.
- It is also recommended that you carry fluorescent jackets for each person in the car, to wear outside the vehicle in the case of breakdown (this is now compulsory in France and the Czech republic). In Austria and the Czech Republic, it is now law that dipped lights are used on all roads, all year.
- Due to the closeness of the border, it is not uncommon to be stopped by German Customs. So don’t forget to carry passports, vehicle & insurance documents with you whenever driving.
- If you are coming in winter, the roads on the German side of the border are kept clear between snow falls. Winter tyres are essential if travelling when it is snowing. Winter tyres are expensive, so it may be cheaper to fly and hire a car in coming in winter.
- Children under 12 or under 1.5 meters tall (5 foot approx.), must have a child seat or booster cushion.
- If you are bringing your own car, most UK insurance companies automatically cover you for driving in the Czech Republic at no extra cost. It is advisable to check before leaving the UK.
- Static speed cameras, although not as prevalent as in the UK, are on the increase in Europe in general. Mostly, they are not clearly marked, nor do they flash. More generally, mobile speed traps are used in Europe. Fines can be on the spot & penalty points can be heavy if you are unlucky enough to be caught out by either. Speed limits in Europe are very similar to the UK.
- Both Austrian and Czech motorways are toll roads. You can purchase a sticker to display on your windscreen at the border controls and most petrol stations. In the Czech Republic you can purchase motorway toll stickers for a year, a month, a week, 3 days, etc.
Driving from the UK: Use the links to the route planners listed above. By motorway, it takes about 10 hours to drive here from Calais. Most route-planners suggest the following route - Calais - Brussels - Aachen - Koln - Frankfurt - Heilbronn - Nuremburg - Regensburg - Deggendorf, then across country to Bayerisch Eisenstein. We would suggest you try another route. Slightly longer and costing around €30 each way in French motorway tolls, it has less traffic than some other routes and therefore can be faster: Calais – Reims – Metz – Saarbrucken – Mannheim – Heilbronn – Nuremburg – Regensberg – Deggendorf – then cross country to Bayerisch Eisenstein (signposted)
Driving from Belgium/Netherlands: The E45, by-passes Frankfurt, (the traffic is lighter than on the Rhine autobahns, so could save time), then Würzburg – Nürnberg – Regensburg – Deggendorf, then cross country to Bayerisch Eisenstein, (signposted).
From Zwiesel: Follow the B11 in the direction of the Czech Republic. On entering the village, continue past the petrol station on the left. Past the pedestrian crossing, take the next left, signposted Arber, Bad Kötzting, Brennes. (If you continue straight on you come immediately to the border control point, which you can clearly see from the turning). The road goes uphill, bending sharp left within meters of the junction, Take the 2nd road on the left, as the road bends sharp right. Follow the road round to the right and Gästehaus Am Berg is the 3rd property on the right.
From the Czech Republic: This route is not recommended in winter, as the roads in the Czech republic are not cleared of snow as frequently as in Germany and so can be tricky. Follow the road through Zelezna Ruda, to the border crossing point. Cross the border and immediately turn right, signposted Arber, Bad Kötzting, Brennes. The road goes uphill, bending sharp left within meters of the junction, Take the 2nd road on the left, as the road bends sharp right. Follow the road round to the right and Gästehaus Am Berg is the 3rd property on the right.
There is a large car park at the front of the house. The entrance to the house can be easily identified by the word “Willkommen” above the door.

Some things to note:
- Some car hire companies will not allow you to take their cars across the border into the Czech Republic. Check before you hire a car that you can take it into the Czech Republic, if you intend to visit places over the border.
- If you are coming in winter, you might want to insist that your hire vehicle is fitted with winter tyres. These are essential if you arrive when it’s snowing. The roads on the German side of the border are kept very clear between snow falls. Re-check when you collect your car that winter tyres are fitted.
- If you are travelling with children under 12 or under 1.5 meters tall, they must have a child seat or booster cushion. Check when you book that your car hire company can provide these.
