Grosser Arber For most of the year, you can take a cable car to the top, of Grosser Arber. Or if you prefer you can walk up (or down) on clearly marked paths. At both the top and bottom of the cable car, there are places to eat & drink and enjoy the views. On clear days you can see as far as the Alps, as well as across the Bavarian and Bohemian Forests. There are marked paths down to Kleiner & Grosser Arbersees and Rissloch Water Falls. At the cable car base station, there are a children’s play area. In the ski season, there are a number of other ski lifts in operation. Night skiing is also possible.

Ludwigsthal Haus Zur Wildnis - Opened in the Summer of 2006, the Haus Zur Wildnis provides information on the National Park. It has a good inactive area, with a walk through display of life in the soil. Audio visual displays, children’s play area and a re-creation of cave paintings from southern France. It also has a small animal park of species native to the forest. The wolf enclosure is particularly good, with its raised covered walk way, that takes you over the enclosure and a viewing tower (not for vertigo sufferers). The site is free, but there is a large car park, which costs about €12 for the day. The station is directly at the site and is only one stop on the train from Bayerisch Eisenstein. Alternatively, it’s a very pleasant, fairly flat cycle ride down the valley from Bayerisch Eisenstein.

Grosser Arbersee (Lake) This is a very pleasant if sometimes crowded spot. Very easily accessible by car. There are pedaloes to hire during the summer and a restaurant with large raised terrace. The lake is of special scientific interest, with floating islands of vegetation, unfortunately all the information boards around the lake are currently only in German. It takes about an hour to amble round the lake.

Kleiner Arbersee (Lake) Again a very pleasant spot of scientific interest. Not quite as crowded as Grosser Arbersee, as not quite as easily accessible, but still a popular spot. You can either follow the marked path from Brennes or take the little tourist train. Allow an hour to walk each direction. There is a pleasant waterside café.
