Shopping

Webcam of Grosser Arber

You cannot buy food at a shop in Germany on a Sunday. (Cafes and restaurants are normally open 7 days per week)

Supermarkets belonging to major chains are generally open 8am to 8pm, Monday to Saturday. Other shops close sometime between midday and 6pm on a Saturday/no Sunday opening. During the week most shops are open at least between 10am and 5pm. Many have longer opening hours than this. Some shops, especially ones in the village, close for up to 2 hours at lunchtime (12noon to 2pm)

Bayerisch Eisenstein has a Nah und Gut supermarket, 2 butchers, 2 drinks markets, a toiletries shop, a post office, a bakers, 2 sports shops which sell and hire equipment, sell clothes and offer courses in winter sports, mountain biking, Nordic walking etc. and several clothes and other shops. The shops are concentrated in the Bahnhofstrasse, Hohenzollernstrasse and around the Dorfplatz (village square).

Food shops in the village close Saturday lunchtime. Only the sports/tourist shops and bakery are open on Sundays.

In the Czech Republic, Klatovy is the closest place to go shopping – it’s around 40 minutes drive on the Plzen road. As you drive into the town, there is a Hypernova hypermarket on the left. Zelezna Ruda is the close Czech town, but unless you are keen on the Asian Markets, it’s range and quality of shops is poor.

Internet cafes : there is one in Zwiesel, nearly opposite the Schott glassworks. There are also several in Zelezna Ruda.

There are major shopping centres at Passau, Regensburg, Nuremburg, Munich and Prague and Pilsen. Deggendorf also has a good range of shops and cafes.

The Glass Road. There are numerous glass works, factory shops selling a large range of glass products, in a multitude of styles. Most have demonstrations of glass blowing and factory tours.

Here are just a few to chose from:
